Research on nuclear safety

The licence holder of nuclear power plants is obliged to take the necessary precautions against damage caused by the construction and operation of nuclear installations in conformity with the scientific and technological state of the art. The supervisory authority rests with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) supports the BMUV with its expertise.

BASE works to contribute to the further development of the legal and sub-statutory nuclear regulations. It is active in various national and international regulatory bodies and scientific networks. BASE’s tasks also include following the scientific and technological progress and maintaining competence in the field of nuclear safety.

Research thus forms a central component for assessing the safety of

  • the dismantling of nuclear power plants,
  • the operation of research reactors,
  • nuclear facilities abroad,
  • is crucial for a competent co-operation within the framework of international review processes.

The main research topics at BASE are outlined in the research agenda.

Currently tendered research projects are published on E-Vergabe, the federal government's procurement tender platform.
