Transport casks
The protection of people and the environment must be ensured at all times whenever radioactive materials are transported. Transport casks play a crucial role in this.
Safety due to transport casks
Together with their contents, transport casks form the so-called package. In accordance with the "safe package" concept pursued in Germany, the package ensures protection against the hazards of radioactive material during transport.
Depending on the hazard potential (type and quantity) of the contents to be transported, the protection concept takes into account different requirements for the material and construction of the casks. Accordingly, there are different types of casks.
Special emphasis is placed on casks for the transport and storage of spent fuel. These casks are subject to very strict requirements. They also need to be approved. In other words, the manufacturer has to prove to the competent authority that the stringent requirements have been met. As the competent authority, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management verifies compliance with the statutory requirements.
