EGU annual meeting: submit abstracts now for the interdisciplinary BASE session

The EGU annual meeting will take place in Vienna in May 2026. With more than 1,000 scientific sessions and a wealth of specialist contributions, it is Europe’s largest geoscience conference.

Abstracts can now be submitted for the interdisciplinary session led by BASE on regulatory aspects of deep geological repositories.

Abstracts on disposal and related topics

The BASE session is entitled “Deep Geological Repositories: Characterization of Barrier Materials, Integrity Assessment, and Regulatory Insights”. The event will focus on the close link between geoscientific findings and regulatory challenges.

What lessons have we learned so far from repository projects? Participants are invited to engage critically and in depth with this question over the course of the EGU meeting.

In addition, the session will provide a forum to exchange views on different repository concepts, public outreach at national and transnational level, participation programmes, site strategies and legal frameworks.

Submit abstracts now: BASE encourages geoscientists and researchers from related disciplines working on disposal questions or allied topics to submit abstracts for this session. The submission deadline is 15 January 2026.

International scientific exchange on final disposal

Europe’s largest geoscience meeting will be held in Vienna from 3–8 May 2026. Around 16,000 experts are expected to attend EGU26. The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), together with several research institutions, is hosting an interdisciplinary session on repository projects.

The aim of the event is to further strengthen international scientific exchange on the topic of final disposal.

Background to the event

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is the umbrella organisation for Europe’s geoscientists. It is the continent’s largest scientific society in the geosciences and related disciplines.

The BASE session is being organised in cooperation with Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources, the Institute of Repository Research at Clausthal University of Technology, and the IAEA’s Waste Technology Section (Austria).
